  1. 1778-1868. British Whig politician and
  2. lawyer. From 1811 he was chief adviser to the
  3. Princess of Wales (afterwards Queen
  4. Caroline), and in 1820 he defeated the
  5. attempt of George IV to divorce her. He was
  6. Lord Chancellor 1830-34, supporting the
  7. Reform Bill. Born in Edinburgh, he was a
  8. founder of the Edinburgh Review 1802. He sat
  9. in Parliament 1810-12 and from 1816, and
  10. supported the causes of public education and
  11. law reform. He was one of the founders of
  12. University College, London, 1828. When the
  13. Whigs returned to power 1830, Brougham
  14. accepted the chancellorship and a peerage a
  15. few weeks later. His allegedly dictatorial
  16. and eccentric ways led to his exclusion from
  17. office when the Whigs next assumed power
  18. 1835. After 1837 he was active in the House
  19. of Lords.
